Dear Bob: Let. It. Be. (spoilers)

This past week we watched the re-emergence of a Sonny many Sonny fans loved watching because he encompassed every side of Sonny over the period of one week. The writing for Sonny was a total opposite of what Sonny fans have hated for months. During the weeks leading up to the wedding, we began to recognize layered Sonny again, the mobster with a heart who was able to show a Sonny who actually possesses humor, hope and tenderness. Sonny, as played correctly by Maurice, is not going to suddenly transform his character from ruthless mob boss to angelic St. Sonny. That would never fly and it shouldn’t.

But with a delicate balance, Maurice managed to deliver a Sonny who bared his soul and poured his heart out, admitting how much he hurt Brenda while reminding her that it is time to take chances and try to be happy. His poignant profession of love demonstrated the softness, dedication and deep love Sonny is capable of showing. We watched two people reunite in happiness and hope, showering each other with a tender display of love and affection. Sonny gave us more smiles in three days than we saw in a year. Maurice, during the past two months, showed us a Sonny that his fans remembered and loved all over again….whole Sonny, someone we have been looking for and missed for a LONG time. But Maurice wasn’t finished demonstrating the complexities of this character. After all, he is still mob boss, Sonny Corinthos, and until he no longer runs the mob, he must remain in character and react as a mob boss would. Devastated by Brenda’s “near death” experience and her kidnapping, within moments we watched a transformation from happy tender new husband, to ruthless, angry, frightened mob boss willing to do anything to find his missing bride. That is as it should be and we see a Sonny, almost out of control, determined to rescue Brenda.

What we fans would like to point out to Mr. Guza, is that the character of Sonny becomes far more interesting and acceptable when Maurice is allowed to play Sonny realistically, the way mobsters live and react NOW not in the Capone days.   Sonny, after he finds Brenda, should be written to have a life, a family if desired, a wife who loves him and can deal with his profession, the capability like most mobsters to help others even though he is a mobster. This is how it is in real life.  A mob BOSS is not banished to a small dark office where processions of angry townspeople take turns bad mouthing him constantly to his face and behind his back. Nobody is saying he must be praised for wrong doing, but the one-sided preaching by Jax, finger-pointing and lecturing by Diane and Edward, the whispered “Sonny is evil” stuff needs to be cut down. You can’t have a saintly hit man excused constantly by the very same people who hate his boss.

If Sonny and Brenda are to stay married, and please Mr. Guza don’t mess this up and bring out that nasty couple breaking hatchet you love to use, write them as a married couple who are capable of finding a way to work through problems, cope with his profession. Give them angst and problems of their own without inflicting second and third parties again to recycle old worn out complications. Many have waited years for this couple and they have the chemistry, professional ability and charisma to provide good solid entertainment if written with the right combination of passion, fire, humor and tenderness.

Give us all a break and restore Sonny’s layering so we can see Maurice peeking through laughing and flashing those dimples periodically along with Vanessa’s giggling, Brenda’s close touches, and devastating eye contact. This can be a fun couple to watch if you don’t send dark, always brooding and guilt ridden Sonny back to us. The chemistry between Maurice and Vanessa is awesome. Please, Let. It.  Be . Surprise us and entertain us…don’t send Sonny back down to the depths of hell again for a long time. He just clawed his way out of there. Please let this couple grow and evolve together.

And Furthermore

Guza’s preoccupation with organized crime limits GH to mob morality tales and prevents GH from exploring other kinds of crime (white-collar) and business ethics in general.   Edward is a robber baron.   Sure GLQ has factories in places like Jacarta.  That way they can hire children to work 10 hour days for low pay in horrible working conditions while at the same time pollute the air and water.   Gotta keep those profits up!  What? It’s legal!

Jax is a corporate raider.  He doesn’t create, he destroys. Through hostile takeovers he just buys companies and then dismantles them.  People like Jax prey on the weak and vulnerable and leave their lives in tatters.  Victims of corporate raiders are robbed of their livelihood and left without the businesses they spent their lives building.  But what goes up must come down, right Jax?  What? It’s legal!

I’m not saying white-collar crime excuses organized crime. I’m just questioning the moral authority of Sonny’s chief finger pointers.  What Edward and Jax do may be legal (they skate on thin ice) but is it ethical?  At least with Sonny we know what we get.  He doesn’t dress himself up in platitudes and fake morality.  I get that  Michael or Morgan should not look to Sonny as a role model but should they be looking at robber baron Edward or corporate raider Jax  as role models? Seriously? Really?

Wouldn’t a story juxtaposing Sonny’s criminal activities with ELQ being cited for toxic waste dumping resulting in something along the likes of the Love Canal or oil spills be interesting?  Bring on a sexy environmentalist or hot states attorney to look into insider trading, subprime loans or another type of business fraud (hello, recession of 2009).  Such a story line would be timely and more interesting than another mob related bombing or putting a child in harm’s way.

Stay Fabulous!

March madness from SOS

IT’S MARCH MADNESS ON GENERAL HOSPITAL

On the heels of a fantastic February, General Hospital will continue to deliver in the month of March. From what we’re hearing, the usual lull between February and May sweeps may be a thing of the past as things are about to heat up in Port Charles. This month, look for the residents to be rocked with anger, betrayal, danger, reveals and regrets.

As stated our GH Previews for this week, it’s revealed that Brenda’s baby may be alive after all! Turns out Brenda may not be the only deceptive dame in Port Charles. It’s a race against time to find Brenda, as Theo seeks the truth and Sonny seeks to rescue his wife. The task won’t be easy, as uneasy alliances are forged in an effort to rescue the new Mrs. Corinthos from the clutches of a madman hellbent on revenge. When Brenda’s life hangs in the balance, it’s Doctors Scorpio & Drake who rush to the rescue. Will Sonny and Robin’s love be enough to save Brenda, or will it be too late?

Once again Dante is torn between loyalty to the badge and loyalty to his family. Will he be able to walk the fine line between loyal brother and honest officer? Or will Dante’s beliefs yet again cause someone he loves to be hurt?

Last year she was torn between two men, this year she has none. When faced with the harsh reality of the decisions she’s made, Elizabeth begins to voyage down a reckless road. With the news that Rebecca Herbst will stay at General Hospital, it seems like Elizabeth’s storyline is about to get interesting after months of being on the back-burner. Lucky’s new found happiness is short-lived when he gets news that will change his life forever, and it’s not what you’re thinking!

Sam finds herself on the other side of a familiar situation.

Cliches abound, here’s what to expect in March: Love will persevere for one couple; love will blossom for another. A couple on the verge of war find themselves sidetracked by a more pressing issue. Shocking news could lead to devastation. A family divided becomes a family united. Long-time enemies will find common ground. Through all of this, the hospital is at the center of attention this month. But will GH discharge as many patients as they admit?

You know the players. You know the scenarios. It’s March Madness. Time to place your bets
Family members converge upon the hospital to support Sonny and Brenda.
Carly enlists Luke and Ethan to blackmail Jax.
Liz walks in on Nik and Brook Lynn about to do the deed.
Sonny is hell bent on revenge.

The battle between Patrick & Robin and Lisa comes to a head.

Suzanne holds the answers to Theo & Brenda’s burning questions. Who will she reveal the truth to?Elizabeth learns the results of Aiden’s latest paternity test. Will the truth be revealed or has Helena struck again?

The lives of two children hang in the balance. Is a devastating event in Port Charles history set to repeat itself?

Everybody is suspect as a new mystery unravels in Port Charles in 2011.

A beleaguered couple finds their way back to each other.

  1. ELQ has already had a toxic waste storyline. In fact, the questionable ethics of ELQ management has been discussed over and over by the show – the condom fiasco, the ELQ Tracy, the Port Charles Hotel fire, jerking Lucy around at Deception, the back-story that discussed early ELQ dealings with Jack Boland and the opposition from Bradley Ward…

    • Edward doesn’t have a steady stream of visitors who remind him and others day after day of his wrong doings. With the housing crisis and the down turn in the economy, this would be the perfect time to write another white collar crime story. At the very least someone could remind Edward of his wrong doings when he’s hypocritically finger pointing at Sonny.

      Yours in Peace
